About the project
Globalization requires longer and longer routes for the transportation of goods, and that demands new solutions related to the more effective use of various modes of transport. Seeking to attain a suitable level of integration of Lithuania into the European Union's transportation network, the preconditions for the smooth interoperation of various modes of transportation are being created. For this purpose, the project "Design and construction of an intermodal terminal at the Kaunas Public Logistics Centre" will be implemented in 2015. The project is being carried out by Lithuanian Railways (AB "Lietuvos geležinkeliai"), making use of support from the EU Cohesion Fund. This project also works to achieve one of the most important goals of the EU and Lithuania: to reduce roadway usage and transfer a large part of the burden of cargo transportation to railways.
The essence of intermodal (multiple modes) transportation is to transport freight from the beginning to end of the route in one unit of cargo, but to combine at least two types of transportation for that purpose: railways, inland waterways, sea, air and roadways. Using such means, it is not necessary to handle cargo individually. Packed in containers and loaded from one vehicle or mode to another in a terminal, cargo is moved to its final destination. Construction of the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal (KIT) at the Palemonas rail yard helps to ensure the intermodality of the Kaunas Public Logistics Centre (PLC): after completion of the European-gauge Rail Baltica, the Kaunas PLC becomes one of the strongest cargo transportation and logistics centres in the Baltic Sea region.

Vision – to contribute to the long-term and balanced development of logistic infrastructure and intermodal transportation, the parts of a balanced system of intermodal transportation in the Republic of Lithuania.
Mission – to integrate all transport sectors, and in this way to increase opportunities to ensure cargo mobility and the more efficient use of vehicles and to improve the quality of logistics and related services, thereby increasing the attractiveness and competitiveness of Lithuania as a transit country, making better use of the state's resources and decreasing cargo transportation expenses and the impact of heavy vehicles on the environment.
• Integration of modes of transportation permits greater cargo mobility and more effective use of vehicles, improves the quality of cargo transportation and customs services, reduces expenses for cargo transportation, and allows enhanced cooperation among companies operating in varied types of business.
• Connection with international networks: Kaunas Intermodal Terminal and Kaunas PLC operations increases the competitiveness of Lithuania's transportation and logistics system in the international market.
• More flexible, efficient business processes, reducing air pollution, accidents, and noise.
Stage I – An intermodal terminal with all necessary infrastructure is built using 1435 mm and 1520 mm railway track. The terminal's capacity is 1,120 TEU, and there is access from the Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipėda motorway. Stage II – Having built the Rail Baltica track, it will become possible to service freight trains (goods trains) of different gauges, both European and Russian. Having established the logistics park in the former Kaunas industrial zone (Palemonas, Naujasodis) and the Kaunas FEZ, there will be the necessary preconditions for efficient development of companies providing transportation, logistics and other commercial services. Stage III – Having reached a loading volume of 100,000 TEU/year, the container warehousing yard will be expanded in the territory of the terminal and the Kaunas PLC.
Palemonas in Kaunas District was selected as a convenient location in the country's geographic centre. The railway infrastructure here is well-developed, there is convenient access to the country's main roads (the A1 and A6 motorways and others), nearby are the I and IX transport corridors and the Kaunas International Airport, and the seaports of Klaipėda and Kaliningrad are relatively close, opening up routes to Western and Eastern European markets and CIS countries.

• each client is offered a levelled plot of land with all necessary engineering infrastructure (water supply, sewage system, electricity, natural gas), installed up to the border of the plot of land
• the fee for sub-rental of the plot of land must be paid immediately for the entire period of the rental.
