
FREIGHT TRAFFIC
AB Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) is a railway undertaking licensed to provide freight services on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania. Company's division, the Freight Directorate, performs repairs to freight rolling stock, carries out its maintenance, and renders freight forwarding and other related services.
AB Lietuvos Geležinkeliai orients its activities towards introducing new services and technologies, meeting customer needs, applying flexible system of tariffs, as well as providing marketing solutions.
In 2012, AB Lietuvos Geležinkeliai carried 49,4 million tonnes of freight. Import freight accounced for 34 per cent of the total freight, transit freight for 25 per cent, export freight for 11 per cent, and domestic freight for 30 per cent. Oil and oil products – 17,7 million tones (36 per cent of the total freight), fertilizers – 12,6 million tonnes (26 per cent of the total freight).

Development of Information Technology
Public Logistics Centres
In order to develop intermodal freight transport in Lithuania, public logistics centres are being founded in Vilnius (nearby Vaidotai Marshalling Yard) and Kaunas. The EU financial assistance of the Cohesion Fund will be used for establishing infrastructure necessary for said centres: modern overland intermodal terminals, exclusive in the region, will be built, and conditions will be created for setting up companies on the territory of the terminal engaged in transport, logistics or other freight related activities. This conception is expected to encourage commercial cooperation among transport modes, and more freight will be carried by rail which is more cost-efficient and environmental friendly mode of transport.
Container Traffic
Container traffic is becoming the main trend in developing freight services due to its versatility.
The implementation of intermodal projects “Saulė” (Sun) and “Merkurijus” (Mercury) has begun.
