"The new direction of container transportation that was started today in Klaipeda is in line with our strategy - to expand the geography of routes, to diversify the transported cargo portfolio and to increase cargo flow" - said Mantas Bartuška, CEO of "Lietuvos Geležinkeliai".
"More and more cargo is transported in containers worldwide - each year their share increases. More and more customers are opting for this type of shipping, ensuring fast, reliable and competitive freight transportation", added Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of "LG CARGO".
According to the statement of E. Lazauskas, the short-term freight of only one and a half days from Klaipeda to Kiev, will provide new mobility opportunities for both clients and partners.
Future plans include route development to the port of Odessa
According to the General director of Ukrainian Railways Jevgeny Kravtsov, a great deal of interest of the carriers has been observed recently related to the creation of regular container transportation routes to Europe.
"Today we are sending the first train from the Draugystės railway station to the Brovary town in the Kiev city district. The organization of regular train connection will allow the company to attract additional cargo, which is carried with alternative transportation methods at the moment," - said J. Kravtsov.
According to Gediminas Kuncevičius, General Manager of "INTERMODAL CONTAINER SERVICE", the transportation of goods by this container train will ensure regularity and a transit time that meets the needs of the customers.
"In the past, the transportation of containers by rail from Klaipeda to Kiev lasted 5-7 days, and now - it is just one and a half days. The conditions above will be guaranteed by a fleet of own wagons, the assurance of railway capacity, an approved schedule and a new private container terminal used for the container distribution in Kiev, "commented G. Kuncevičius.
It is expected that the train will run from Klaipeda to Kiev on a weekly basis and will carry more than 10 thousand TEU annually. In the future, it is planned to extend this route to Odessa and thus connect the Klaipėda Seaport with the largest seaport in Ukraine in Odessa.
